You’ll need to book the rental car far in advance – those sell out in July. If your schedule is flexible you may be able to wing it a bit and book last minute but you’ll need a flexible budget and a flexible attitude about where you stay as well. Some small towns have limited accommodation so if its full, you might have a bit of a drive to the next place. Or you might have to be content with paying a ton for a high end place. Or you might end up in very basic accommodation with shared bathrooms (like at some older B&Bs). I wouldn’t recommending winging it when it comes to accommodation, but I think with some flexibility, it’s possible. If you can book things a day or three in advance rather than the day of. Have a great trip!

First off, this was one of the best personal travel blogs I’ve ever read, after having read several of them for several years of travel in several places around the world. I just wanted to say, thanks for that. You seemed to cover everything I wanted to know! I’m Canadian as well, from the West as well, and I’ve yet to travel to NFLD. My question is, during the month of July, how easy or difficult do you think it might be to “travel by the seat of one’s pants” in terms of accomodation? I’ll have a rental car and about 2-3 weeks. Is booking hotels WELL ahead of time necessary, or could I get away with last minute bookings and going at my own pace? Just a note, while I still do some hiking, I’ve gotten too old and soft for camping. 😉 Thanks!
